My favorite Chinese restaurant when I'm at home. It can get a little crowded over the holidays but what do you expect when everybody else is closed? Best Chinese food in the area!

Terrible! This has been some of the worst food I have eaten in Detroit. This is my first yelp review and I just have to do it because I can't get over how bad this was - the french fries were bad! Old refried fries! My sons burger was burnt and like one reviewer posted all our chicken dishes were coated in this disgusting bar-b-q like sauce. Had to send it back basically inedible. The wonton soup was good and thank goodness I got that because that's about what my dinner amounted to. And to boot they're overpriced! Just stay away - don't waste your money!

ABSOLUTE WORST CHINESE RESTAURANT IN TOWN! WILL NEVER RETURN! I have been here on more than one occasion with hopes "maybe next time will be better"..... never did that once happen. I called the other day to order a carry out and asked the lady on the phone "can I add baby corn, I will pay the extra cost", she responded "haha I don't think so!" I said "excuse me?" She then told me it did not come with that dinner (which I was obviously aware of). I picked up my dinner and there was more sauce than there was meat. The beef was drowning in sauce. Not to mention the taste was completely bland. They never give fresh rolls when you order carry out, I ALWAYS have to ask for fresh ones. Although this is the first time I ordered that they actually got my order correct. On another occasion, I ordered carry out and once I got home, realized it was completely something that was not mine, I brought it back and the lady ( I will assume the owner ) told me "there's nothing I can do about it, you already ate some." ( I DID NOT TOUCH ONE BITE!!!) Only have came here because it is the closest Chinese to my house but needless to say I will NEVER RETURN and will be more than happy to drive the extra few miles to a way better chinese restaurant with much better service. If there was a "zero star" I could rate this place, that's what I would give them.

In all fairness, I came here on Mother's Day, so the place was really really packed. But the food was quite awful. The second star was earned because my family enjoyed themselves in spite of the food. It was bland, gravy-heavy, and just not tasty. Oddly, my grandmother returns regularly. I have, and shall, not.

I have been here many times and I always have great food...a bit expencive..fried rice has whole shrimp in it. .....and the sauces are wonderful......great service...yum...nice atmosphere. ...white linens on table

The clientele is a bit on the older side, and English is a second language for much of the staff, but I find these nuances of House of Ing charming, not off-putting. Cocktails are cheap. Great soups and egg rolls. The chicken lettuce wraps are excellent, as are most of the house specialties. Every entree comes with a giant sweet roll and butter, as well as ice cream for dessert--the chocolate mocha and ginger are two of the best.

Quite frankly, I do not like this place. The ambiance is fine and the waitstaff is good. However, the food is not! My family, clearly not connoisseurs like myself, love House of Ing. I, however, find my meal rather bland and the carrots cut in such a way that one can only think "frozen food?" Metro Detroit has plenty of great Chinese restaurants to offer. I do not recommend this one.

I just completed my 2nd disappointing visit to this restaurant. I used to eat there fairly regularly until my son (who I went there with) moved out of town. The last two times I have been there May '10 and today were very disappointing. The lady who was always there before wasn't there today. And the woman I asked about the buffet was not nice and not the same lady. The tea was luke warm and the food on the buffet was cold. There was no almond chicken and teriyaki chicken on the buffet. The loose meat for lettuce wraps was bad and the lettuce was wilted. I will say the food looked good but wasn't as good as it looked. I wont go back.!!!

House of Ing is within walking distance from my office, so when I feel like hitting up a Chinese buffet or don't feel like driving the extra 5 miles for the "real" Chinese good, this is where I will go. for $6.95, obviously I'm not looking for a buffet a mile long, so what it's worth, the buffet isn't half bad. I love the wonton soup, crab rangoon, fried rice, and noodles. That's not to say all the meats they do serve aren't good, I just love my starches. The servers speak Mandarin and/or Cantonese, so it helps to have someone that speaks the language to go with you if you want to order off the actual menu. The decor is nothing to write home about, and the service is fine, especially if you're there for a buffet. Overall, it's a solid Chinese restaurant for the area.

The worst meal I have EVER eaten! I would not wish my worst enemy the torture of eating at this place. Steer clear of any restaurant that is full of silver-haired diners looking for a cheap meal. I hate to say it but that means this a place that dishes out a lot of food for a cheap price, but the quality is subpar. What I never thought I would ever experience is a place that serves nasty brown rice. How is it possible to mess up brown rice? I had the shrimp and broccoli and the shrimp and lobster sauce. The "shrimp" didn't taste like shrimp. The sauces were devoid of anything herb or spice resembling Asian flavors found in Chinese food. The shrimp reminded of the shrimp you get out of a can. Do yourself a favor and save your taste buds for a place that serves shrimp that taste like shrimp and brown rice that taste like brown rice. It should be illegal to serve terrible tasting, poor quality food. This restaurant is the epitome of outright laziness. I wouldn't serve this "food" at a soup kitchen! Typically when I'm served such a horrible meal, I would talk to a manager and ask for the meal to be removed from my bill. In this case, I said nothing and RAN out the door! I couldn't wait to leave - it was THAT BAD. I wish I could give this place a -1 rating! :-(

Writing this review feels like kicking a starving, 3-legged dog as it limps by whimpering, but people need to be warned...House of Ing has gone from a outdated, slightly questionable place to a dismal, horrifying place. Upon walking in, you would think it's closed....they only have about 1/5 bulbs lit, and the decor is outdated to the point of discomfort, with cracked bench seating in booths, etc. It also does not look as though it's been cleaned in quite some time. I got a teapot that was dirty, with a crust of something on the spout. I ordered the boneless chicken lunch special. The wonton soup tasted like rehydrated chicken buillion, the won ton was flavorless, yet this was the highlight of the meal. The chicken arrived very hot, but was tough, chewy, and I'm pretty sure - old. The fried rice was awful, inedibly old tasting, like they'd used 5 year old, dirty vegetable oil to make it. The gravy was poisonously colored. For some reason, I screwed up the courage to taste it, and it didn't taste as rotten as it looked, but there wasn't any flavor whatsoever. I ate a little bit, just out of stubborn cheap-ness, then I figured I was probably asking to be sick all night, so I gave up, and went through McDonalds' drive-thru. The people are very nice there, so I do feel bad about the review, but this place has gone from circling-the-drain to firmly-wedged-into-the-hair-filled-drain-trap. Don't go.

I don't know what to really feel about this place... I'm going to go back one more time, but the few times I've been there it has been good service for lunch... dimmly lit, and there is always a bunch of the automotive field all there as well. My biggest complaint was actually some of the other patrons that were sitting in the booth behind me. All they could do was complain about their job, and it ended up making my meal there kinda regrettable. I focus on a few dishes when I try new places... Gai Kow and General tso's. I was able to get the Gai Kow, and I was rather impressed with it with the fresh selections of veggies that came along with the chicken dish. Next time I go back, I'll hopefully have some non-complainers behind me, and hopefully will enjoy the General Tso's.

This place must have changed owners. Used to be an above average Chinese take out place. Now it is freakin awful!! Horrible sweet and sour sauce, crappy sauce for the egg rolls, egg rolls mostly dough and no filling...... No one in the dining room when I came in, and now I know why. I'd give negative stars if I could. What a shame.

  • Aaron Y.

I got the sesame chicken lunch special which came with egg drop soup and am egg roll and fried rice. The sesame chicken was alright. The fried rice was bland and the two side dishes weren't good. Cheap and quick though definitely subpar.

There is one specific dish they serve here, that I can't get at any other chinese restaurant in the area. Chicken Silver Needle Noodles. My absolute favorite. And, it's always delicious when I order it. My fiance orders something different every time. Food is normally really good, except don't get the singapore noodles. They're not flavorful. The place is generally empty, but service is pretty decent. Prices are very reasonable.

We got carry out. It's our first (...and last) time eating here. The food is horrible. The rice seemed like it was days old. Gristle in the steamed dumplings. The sweet and sour sauce was disgusting. Very disappointed!

I haven't been to House of Ing in over a year since I changed jobs. House of Ing was always the best Chinese restaurant in the area for miles and miles around. I have many favorite dishes there. Today I was in the area and decided to get a carry out. I was so disappointed in the quality and flavor of the food, I ended up throwing it away. The chicken lo mein had a rubbery chicken with spaghetti noodles in a greasy sauce without vegetables, only onions. Even the wonton soup had a funny flavor to it. I didn't think any Chinese restaurant could do a terrible job on that! The egg rolls were okay, we could eat those. They have obviously changed owners but kept the name. I would never recommend this to anyone, & I will never be back.

I used to come here all the time growing up because it's right next to my house. I don't know if they changed owners but House of Ing used to be WAY better. The food is just not as tasty as it used to be. The chicken is really gummy and the service is really not that good. I want to love this place but I just have to part ways. =(

  • Mark D.

Simply horrible. The enroll was warm (how does that happen unless it's been sitting around for a while?). And my entree was almost cold and flavorless. A restaurant gets one chance with me--life is just too short to eat sub-par food. Avoid this place like the plague.

Pretty typical Chinese fare. The crowd here is totally the blue hairs and their high pants wearing husbands, though. When in for dinner this week I almost passed out from the heat as either the air was broken or not on and the one fan on a table did nothing to help. I had the shrimp egg foo yong dinner special that cane with soup, egg toll and fried rice - all got about $12. Very fast service and they bring fried won tons with your soup.

It's really hard to find good Cantonese food. I have been all over and there is nothing like this Hong shui Gai available anywhere else that I can find. I love this place. I am so happy that some of the old recipes from when I grew up in Farmington Hills stilll exist. Please keep up the great work and the food is amazingly good. The fried rice is awesome. I will always go here every time i visit Michigan. Your delivery options are awesome too. Nothing can beat the $1 delivery price :)

Worth the extra money. High class Chinese food = no msg and no upset stomach half hour after the meal. This place has all the meals I've come to lunch but at a much healthier presentation. It's a bit more expensive but worth it in my opinion.

I've been to House of ING about 10 times within the past 2 years. Each and every time, I was not impressed and I'm being very kind here. Their prices are much higher than other Chinese restaurants, & the quality of food is terrible. This last time I dined there, the chicken they served me was dripping in grease. Dripping. It was so gross, I asked if I could order something else, & the manager was completely rude about the whole thing. The replacement dish they brought me was cold & very disappointing because they left out the vegetables that came with the dish. I hate to complain, but the way I was treated, the poor quality of food, & just the huge inconvenience of it all, I will go out of my way never to return to House of ING ever again.

Looked good on the outside, stepped in, looked great on the inside. Sat down for buffet. I am pretty sure half the meat here is rotten or refried atleast 5 times. How does this establishment still have its licence? I would really like to know what the people who had good reviews ate here, because everything I had in the buffet was either stale or rotten. Hope I dont go to the hosp. tomorrow. Keep OUT!!!!

People have repeatedly told me that Detroit is a lousy restaurant city with not very discerning diners--if you don't like Greek salads or coney dogs you are out of luck. Well, the comments on House of Ing are testament to this fact. I ate here not long ago on a visit, and it was not just the worst Chinese restaurant I have ever been to but the worst Asian restaurant of any ethnicity--Thai, Indian, Japanese, etc. Anyone who says this is the best Chinese food they have eaten really needs to travel and try the food in other cities. Your taste buds have atrophied.

UPDATE: I'm dropping this down to 2 stars. We ordered carry out from here for dinner on Friday night and the food wasn't half as good as I remember my lunch order being. The quality of the food was not as good, and everything lacked taste. We ordered the Spicy Chicken and the moo shu pork. I think our friends ordered the General Tso's Chicken and the Honey Chicken(?). Either way, none of it was very tasty. However, their portions are huge, so they make the price bearable. There are lots of Chinese restaurants in the area, and I think I'm going to move along to the next... Not going to come back here any time soon. Previous review: I'm only giving House of Ing 3 stars right now because I ordered carry-out from them. One day, when I dine in and consider the whole experience, then I might change my mind. House of Ing is American Chinese. It was tasty and a very high quality, but it was American Chinese. So if you like that kind of food, it's the place for you. I ordered the General Tso's Chicken Lunch Combination. It came with plain rice (which was plain fried rice), an egg roll, and General Tso's Chicken. At first, I thought it was expensive, but after seeing the quantity, I think the price is acceptable. I didn't like the egg roll too much. It was full of noodles. The Chicken and the rice were tasty. I'm looking forward to trying more of their food.

I understand the mixed reviews here. They're not good, but not bad at all. Despite that their carryout has real big portions, it's still overpriced for just mediocre Chinese food. The fried wonton soup was very good tho. I ordered the sesame beef which was tasty but not worth $12. The chicken asparagus stir fry was surprisingly good since the deep fried stuff usually taste better than the stir fry at Chinese places.

Hey... just wanted to say good job on the crispy fried duck. I stopped in after a long day and had a late dinner. I was one of two tables(again it was late) which suited me just fine sat off to myself away from anyone. I must admit 9 out of 10 times I order almond boneless chicken at any Chinese restaurant, just my preference. Family style take out I will eat a little of everything anyone else gets too. I love crispy fried duck. Some places cook it until its like a cross between peanut brittle and beef jerky...not good. This was actually pretty damn good! Crispy on the out side but still succulent and tender inside. It was served with a brown gravy with large quartered mushrooms in it over white rice. I had the server bring me some red pepper oil to spice it up just a bit and sat there and pigged out. Had an egg roll with hot mustard and an egg drop soup. Thoroughly enjoyed the meal and the quiet atmosphere.

I called on my way home one day for take out. I ordered the standard I use when I want to try a new Chinese restaurant. Szechuan chicken medium spicy. The portion was large and I still have leftovers but it was worth it. The only thing that I would change is that it really wasn't very spicy so I will have to go up a degree or two the next time I stop in there. They are a bit pricey for a Chinese restaurant but after looking at the interior of the restaurant you understand that they are a step above most Chinese places. I will try to dine in and get the full experience next time. Check it out if you are on this side of town!

Best overall Chinese restaurant: Few places capture the old-school Chinese restaurant experience like House of Ing does. Dinner still comes on the raised stainless-steel, covered serving dish and in huge quantities. The dine-in service is always great. Nothing is lost in translation. They make all of the standards here, they just make them better. The General Tso's Chicken is spicy goodness and the Moo Shui's are incredible. The won ton soup is a step better than most and the egg rolls are PERFECT. Try the ginger ice-cream scoop for dessert. Pass on the enormous sweet dinner roll though. They have a lunch buffet that showcases the quality of the food at a really great price ($10 and includes a drink.) Sure it has fried rice, soup, sweet'n'sours but they always sneak in a few premium dishes as well. A bar is available if you want a "cocktail." A darkened dining room is great for a romantic night out, but wait until the dinner crowd has left. One of the best in the NW suburbs. Prices are modest but respectable. You always leave with a to-go container. Perfect for that late night snack.

Went for lunch buffet. Chinese dishes are just okay, nothing special. Hot and sour soup was pretty bad. Won't be back.

Oh man, I don't think I've ever been to a worse Chinese restaurant. Honestly. Don't get me wrong, I generally tend to like bad Chinese food (at least the establishments that others deem 'horrible') but House of Ing really opened my eyes to the wide world of icky Chinese food. First of all, don't come here if you're under 50. The entire restaurant was packed with senior citizens except our party. I always thought most seniors were frugal and living on a budget (it just happens with age, it's not their fault) so I was surprised to see so many of them here. The food is unreasonably expensive. I mean really, really expensive. The General Tso's dinner (includes egg roll and soup) is like $19. Seriously?! That costs like $7.50 at the good Chinese restaurants... unbelievable. My General Tso's Tofu dinner was a whopping $14 which is insane. All of the food was really bizarre. My boyfriend ordered General Tso's Chicken, I ordered the General Tso's Tofu and his parents got Sesame Chicken. All of the sauces tasted the same. Not exactly the same, but they all had a very common base. Bet you'll never guess what it was.... Give up? Barbecue sauce! Though each sauce was obviously a bit different than the other (which is weird considering two of us had Tso sauce) they all had the same barbecue aftertaste. So creepy, considering we weren't at a barbecue restaurant. General sentiment: really horrible food. The service was subpar and really awkward. No one spoke English so there was a lot of general confusion and repetition. Again, this doesn't seem like the place for the older crowd since a lot of them can't hear anything to begin with - how are they supposed to understand the server? I will give the servers props, though, for keeping our glasses refilled almost constantly. Lesson: don't go here. Ever. We all collectively decided that if anyone in our family ever suggests having a large get-together here, we will veto it immediately. Our bill was $91 for four people - that is UNHEARD OF for a Chinese restaurant, especially one that is no good. Go to your local take-out joint and relish in all of the good food that is under $10.

I'm surprised by the bad reviews. This is one of the best Chinese restaurants. They have healthy selections...brown rice, no msg, no starch and big on flavor. The atmosphere is top notch. Yes, the prices are up there, but it's located in a wealthy area of Oakland County. The only complaints I have are the egg rolls are too greasy (haven't had one anywhere that isn't), and they don't consistently season for spice. Otherwise, I do go out of my way to visit when I'm in the mood for Chinese food. It's better than any I've had in NYC!

I love this place and the family is awesome. My family and I go there frequently. One day we didn't have enough for take out for whatever reason and the individual said "you pay next time" Lovely place. But I do think they're egg drop soup is a little thick for me. I do love the Crab Rangoon. Delicious. I do recommend this place. :-)

This is the chinese place that I grew up in. Birthdays, family dinners and graduations. As a kid, I knew where the "secret" candy stash was. When the original couple sold the establishment my family stop going. Last weekend my mom and grandfather and I decided to go back. Nothing had seemed to change. The menu and the atmosphere was the same! House of Ing has the best egg rolls in Metro Detroit by far. Make sure you request a hot egg roll because sometimes they serve you on from the warming station. The service is not the best... and the owner was difficult to find/talk with. I recommend the pan fried noodles, Hawaiian chicken, chow fun noodles and of couse a veggie egg roll. Its nice, all meals are served with soup, egg rolls, rice, tea and ice cream. House of Ing has large portions, great for sharing and still some left over to take home.

The greatest Egg Drop Soup I have ever had. I love Chinese food and this place is some of the best with a gourmet twist. The beef asparagus is absolutely fantastic and you get tons of asparagus and it is cooked perfectly.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
